“Viva Africa! Amandla!” With these impactful words, Mr. Ahmed Bening, Secretary General of the Pan-African Youth Union (PYU), initiated a powerful dialogue at the 5th APRM Youth Symposium, which took place at Pan-Africa Parliament in South Africa, underscoring the vital role of young people in shaping Africa’s future. His assertive message was that the decisions and actions of today will mold the continent of tomorrow.
Mr. Bening, speaking on behalf of national youth councils across Africa, acknowledged the importance of past gatherings and challenged this generation to tackle the pressing issues surrounding governance, peace, and development. He drew attention to the dire humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where countless young lives are in turmoil, while lamenting the deafening silence from various sectors of the continent.
In a bold address to African leaders, he stated, “As long as young people remain excluded, disappointed, and unheard… expect protests, expect uprisings, expect change.” This statement highlights a critical reality: youth unemployment and disenfranchisement are not merely statistics but profound crises that threaten dignity and stability.
Mr. Bening pointed out that coups do not emerge in a vacuum; they are the result of widespread mistrust and disillusionment. He emphasized the need for accountability in governance, stating that it must begin with individuals holding themselves and their institutions to high standards: “We cannot demand accountability from our governments if we cannot govern our own youth institutions.”
The PYU’s renewed formal partnership with the African Union represents a pivotal moment, bringing fresh responsibilities to African youth:
- Demand Accountability from Institutions: Young people must insist on transparency and integrity from their leaders.
- Organize, Mobilize, and Lead: A unified approach can amplify youth influence in political and social arenas.
- Transform Words into Action: Change requires more than just rhetoric; it necessitates direct engagement.
Concluding his remarks, Mr. Bening articulated a clear vision: “The Africa we want will not be delivered to us. It will be built by us.” This is a powerful reminder that meaningful change will not come from passivity, but through active participation, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to building a better continent.
As Africa navigates this critical juncture, the youth are positioned as key agents of transformation. The time for inaction and mere promises has passed; it is time for decisive action. #APRMYouth #SAYNews
