As the  5th APRM Youth Symposium kick started yesterday at the Pan-African Parliament in South Africa, Ambassador Marie Antoinette Rose, CEO of the APRM Secretariat, delivered a powerful speech emphasizing the urgent need for transformation in governance across Africa. Her message resonated deeply with the assembled dignitaries, youth leaders, and partners, as she declared, “Business as usual is over.”

Ambassador Rose highlighted the APRM’s commitment to leading by example, advocating for a resolution that ensures greater youth representation in both national and continental structures. She underscored that this symposium serves as a critical initial consultation for the upcoming 2027 Africa Governance Report, which will focus on “Youth in Governance.” This report aims to document and analyze the essential role that young people play in shaping governance frameworks across the continent.

In her address, Ambassador Rose emphasized the importance of youth actively promoting peace, prioritizing dialogue, and defending constitutional order. She noted a significant shift in the mindset of Generation Z, stating that they are no longer content with being labeled “the future.” Instead, they are already taking on leadership roles in boardrooms, parliaments, and digital platforms throughout Africa. “This digital generation is showcasing what civic innovation looks like,” she remarked. From developing applications that combat corruption to spearheading new economic initiatives, young Africans are demonstrating their capacity to effect change and drive progress.

Ambassador Rose poignantly reminded the audience that “prosperity is governed into being, not inherited.” She warned that governance that ignores the realities faced by youth cannot deliver the Africa they envision. Her call to action was clear: change must happen now.

In a show of solidarity, Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira, President of the Pan-African Parliament, commended the APRM for its unwavering commitment to inclusive governance. He emphasized that good governance is not merely a procedural obligation but a vital engagement that must involve every citizen, particularly the youth.

The symposium was graced by esteemed guests, including H.E. Vincent Angelin Meriton, Former Vice-President of Seychelles; Hon. Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi, Minister; Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Former Chairperson of the African Union Commission; and numerous ministers, MPs, and youth leaders. Key regional youth organizations such as the Pan-African Youth Union (PYU), Southern Africa Youth Forum (SAYoF), and the Nasser Youth Movement were also in attendance. Their presence underscored a collective commitment to amplifying the voices of African youth and addressing their demands for change.

There was a clear call on the first day of the symposium: “Youth in Governance: From Promise to Prosperity” is not just a slogan, but a movement that seeks to reshape the narrative of governance in Africa. With the support of all stakeholders, the youth’s vision for a prosperous future can become a reality.

Ambassador Marie Antoinette Rose’s address at the 5th APRM Youth Symposium serves as an urgent reminder of the need for inclusive governance that prioritizes youth. As the continent faces numerous challenges, the active involvement of young leaders is essential in driving the change necessary for a brighter future. Together, the voices and actions of Africa’s youth can forge a path toward sustainable governance and shared prosperity.
