Johannesburg, 6 February:  The Southern Africa Youth Forum (SAYoF) and the young people in the SADC region are heartbroken and deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Nothabo Sibanda, a fearless advocate, devoted mother, and rising feminist leader. Her life, though far too brief, exemplified extraordinary courage, compassion, and impactful advocacy.

As a Women of the South Speak Out (WOSSO) fellow for 2024/2025, Nothabo dedicated her efforts to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, particularly tackling the urgent issue of teenage pregnancy in Matobo District, Matabeleland South, Zimbabwe. Her pioneering advocacy plan, “She is a child, not a mother,” was not merely a campaign title but a profound belief she championed. Nothabo held firm to the conviction that every girl deserves choice, dignity, education, and futures free from harm, tirelessly working to turn this vision into reality in underserved communities.

“Teenage pregnancy remains a critical challenge in Matobo District, and poverty severely limits opportunities, pushing young girls toward early pregnancy and marriage as an escape route,” she lamented in her final fellowship report.

“Nothabo was a young woman with a bright future, and her loss has shaken us all,” expressed WOSSO manager Tabetha Kanengoni. “Both Gender Links and WOSSO are crushed by this loss. We stand in solidarity with Nothabo’s family, loved ones, and fellow sisters during this painful time.”  Nothabo’s remarkable trajectory during her fellowship, which concluded in December 2025, reflects the program’s aspirations and intentions.

Through WOSSO, Nothabo extended her horizons, participating in significant events such as the SADC Heads of State Summit in Harare and the African Women in Dialogue (AfWID) Forum in Johannesburg. These experiences transformed her, sharpening her leadership skills, expanding her networks, and affirming her place within regional feminist movements.

Notably, Nothabo played an instrumental role in the 6th and 7th SADC Youth Forums, held in Zimbabwe and Madagascar respectively. Her active participation led to the formulation of key outcomes aimed at increasing youth inclusion in regional decision-making processes. She emphasized the importance of integrating young voices in discussions around policy, governance, and development to ensure that their perspectives and needs are addressed. Nothabo’s passion for youth empowerment will insprire her peers to advocate for more inclusive platforms where young leaders can shape the future of their communities and nations.

She will be remembered. Rest in  peace Leader! May the family get comforted by the Holy Spirit and the living God!
