In a significant call to action, the Speaker of the Malawi Parliament, the Right Honourable Sameer Suleman, has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to enhance policies and oversight pertaining to Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR). This appeal comes on the heels of pivotal successive meetings organized by the Southern Africa Youth Forum (SAYoF), HIVOS, and the SADC Parliamentary Forum (SADC-PF).
SAYoF and partners hosted an engagement meeting at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe. The dialogue centered on the urgent need to expand access to SRHR services for individuals of all ages across the SADC region. The discussions highlighted the importance of robust legal frameworks to help ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, has the right to access essential health services.
In a follow-up meeting convened by SADC-PF and attended by Her Excellency, the Secretary General of SADC-PF, Boemo Sekgoma, the Right Honourable Suleman emphasized that strengthening SRHR laws is not just a local concern; it aligns with Malawi’s national and global commitments to ensuring health and well-being for all. MPs were encouraged to take active roles in crafting and reinforcing policies that protect and promote these rights, ultimately contributing to a healthier society.
Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights is crucial for the empowerment of individuals and communities. It enables people to make informed choices about their health and well-being, reducing rates of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Moreover, it intersects directly with the broader goals of gender equality and economic development.
Right Honourable Suleman noted progress in reducing maternal mortality and cited policy frameworks such as the Gender Equality Act and the National SRHR Policy, but warned that teenage pregnancies, child marriage, and gender-based violence remain major challenges. He said Parliament, through legislation and oversight, will continue supporting government efforts and called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders. As Malawi strives to meet its commitments both at national and international levels, the emphasis placed on SRHR by the Speaker of Parliament serves as a reminder of the legislative responsibility to prioritize health rights. The call for action resonated with many, reinforcing the belief that better laws can pave the way for a healthier future for all citizens.
The time to act is now, and with the continued advocacy and commitment from all sectors, Malawi can lead the way in ensuring that every individual has the right to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health.
