On November 24–25, 2025, Johannesburg, South Africa, became a focal point for transformative dialogue as the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and the East African Community (EAC) came together under the Tripartite arrangement. They convened a consultative meeting aimed at enhancing the Tripartite Simplified Trade Regime (TSTR) Framework, specifically designed for Informal Cross-Border Traders (ICBTs).

A notable presence at this meeting was the Southern Africa Youth Forum (SAYoF), representing the dynamic perspective of youth involved in informal trade. Their participation underscored the importance of youth engagement in shaping policies that impact their economic opportunities.

Workshops and discussions centered around critical issues affecting livelihoods—ranging from documentation hurdles to product eligibility criteria and transaction thresholds. Participants contributed practical insights that addressed the realities they face in their trade activities. This forum wasn’t merely about presenting information; it sought to collect meaningful feedback that could lead to substantial reforms.

A pivotal theme throughout the meeting was the enhancement of awareness regarding trader rights. The organizers aimed to empower participants, equipping them with the knowledge necessary to advocate for their interests assertively. Each participant’s insights, gathered over the two days, are set to be compiled and presented at a subsequent session with Member States. The goal is clear: to influence policies that directly benefit traders within the region.

The presence of SAYoF highlighted the potential and aspirations of youth in informal trade. Their involvement signifies a broader commitment to fostering an inclusive trade environment, ensuring that young voices are heard in the discussions that shape their economic landscape.

As the TSTR Framework moves closer to implementation, the hopes of participants—especially women and youth engaged in ICBT—are aligned with the promise of a more accessible and equitable trading environment. This meeting not only represented a step toward real change but also illustrated the power of collective voices in shaping the future of trade in Southern Africa.

At the conclusion of the two-day event, the feedback from women and young traders was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed enthusiasm about the potential for the TSTR Framework to broaden their access to markets once validated and implemented across the Tripartite area. This framework aims to demystify trade processes, presenting them in clear, relatable terms that resonate with the daily experiences of informal traders.
